Glanmore House getting dressed up for the holidays

ALEX FILIPE

The City of Belleville's Glanmore National Historic Site is ready for the busy holiday season. Seasonal exhibits have been installed featuring Victorian period Christmas décor, trees, garlands and many antique toys which make the historic house a sight of holiday wonder.

Like everything in the Glanmore House, nothing is just a decoration, careful consideration to historic accuracy is taken into account for each holiday themed item.

“There's always a lot of research behind everything we do,” explained Melissa Wakeling, education and marketing coordinator at Glanmore National Historic Site. “We're celebrating Victorian style Christmas here. It gives you an idea of what those celebrations might have looked like in the 1890s.”

Visitors can peer back in time and see the coveted Victorian era toys that surround the three trees found inside Glanmore. There are also interactive displays where visitors can experience and play with some of the toys that were available to Victorian era children.

“We have a huge antique toy collection, so it's really nice to be able to feature them,” said Wakeling.

“There are also some hands on toys out in the house so that visitors can try themselves. My favorite is the Bagatelle which is this little wooden box that looks like a pinball game.”

The museum is open for visitors Tuesday to Sunday afternoons and is also planning several events through the month of December.

Glanmore “Gaslight” Evenings are back on December 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 and 22. Staff have reproduced the look of Gaslight for these popular holiday evenings. Timed entry admissions are available between 5:30-7:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Event Admission: Adults $10, Students/Seniors $8.50 and Children 5-12 $6.50.

On the December 13th there will be a special pop-up holiday market featuring items from the Bazaar Artisan Market taking place inside Glanmore. A variety of Canadian fine art, blown glass, precious gems, hand knit socks and stunning ornaments will be available for purchase from the Market in this new addition to the event.

Glanmore's Home for the Holidays program takes place on Saturday, December 10, from 1-4:30 p.m. Visitors will experience 1890's Christmas in Belleville. During their visit they can make a simple Christmas ornament. This family-friendly event is free with a donation of a non-perishable food item to Gleaner's Food Bank. Pre-registration is required.

The historic house is also open for general admission Tuesday to Sunday from 1-4:30 p.m. General admission tickets as well as pre-registration for the free Home for the Holidays event and tickets for Glanmore by “Gaslight” Evenings are available at www.glanmore.ca.
