Belleville Sea Cadets operate the Radio Station at Science Centre

Postmedia Staff

Eight Sea Cadets from RCSCC Quinte, the Belleville Sea Cadet Corps were part of 28 cadets from across Ontario on a multi-unit training day at the Ontario Science Centre recently.

Ms Jean Moffet, 99, & PO1 (ret'd) Peter Dederer mentored the cadets on subjects including long range operations, satellite, CW, networking as well as Naval communications protocols and procedures. Every cadet received time using the #VE3OSC station and enjoyed making contacts as far away as Germany and Denmark.

This was an opportunity to give Cadet Radio Station Cadets a chance to get hands-on experience in operating a well-equipped amateur radio station capable of global communications and to expand their contact with STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) learning while networking with like-minded cadets. These cadets are your future technicians, maintainers, programmers, and engineers.

The Amateur Radio Program was started at RCSCC Quinte in response to the COVID-19 shut down expanding to cadet radio stations setting up across Canada. Nationally, 56 cadets are currently taking the course in Basic Amateur Radio towards their Federal Amateur Radio Qualifications with some going on to receive their federal qualification in Morse Code.

Belleville Sea Cadets RCSCC Quinte, a free program, is open to all youth ages 12-18 meeting Thursday evenings at 16 South Front St. in Belleville. New cadets are welcome throughout the year. The Amateur Radio Program joins their active Sailing, Music, Marksmanship offered at the Belleville Sea Cadet Corps.
