Go-Fund help sought for Belleville family dealing with cancer

JACK EVANS

It is a one-way street for cancer victim Adri Fair of Belleville, a loving wife and mother of six lovely children. She knows she can't get off that street, but she has hopes that the speed limit can be slowed down thanks to some new provenly successful technology in the United States.

But at a starting price of $85,000 per treatment with additional treatments of up to $500,000, in U.S. dollars, it is impossible. Thus, her friends have united to start a GoFundMe Page.

One of her many friends is Debbie Shaw, a retired teacher and an accomplished flute player. She describes the family as “six wonderful kids” and adds, “I taught four of them while I taught at St. Michael's.”

The children, she said, now range in age from 14 to 27.

Shaw explains that Adri Fair was diagnosed with Stage Four esophageal cancer early in 2021 after “two years of unfathomable misdiagnosis.” Shortly thereafter her esophagus and stomach have both been surgically removed, but her strong spirit has allowed her to carry on through radiation, chemo, surgeries and more.

But in the United States there are treatments available for Stage Four patients that show great promise, offering new hope. These treatments can keep aggressive cancer at bay, extending quality and length of life for people like Adri.

“For Adri and the family and friends who cherish her every hug and smile and giggle, it's a race to get those treatments.”

Canada has assured the family that such expenditures can be reimbursed after the outlay. But the Fair family is in no position to make such expenditures.

“That's why I started this GoFundMe – to get started,” one of Adri's many friends explained. Adri and husband Matt will split any unused funds raised between their kids' education and cancer research.

“Anyone who knows Adri, knows of her capacity to support, help and lift others all through her life, in every part of her life. This effort is to lift and support Adri in turn and make it possible for her to receive this novel treatment that could tame her cancer and give more of her to the people who love her,” the page founder explained.

She urges to “give what you can” and also to “share on social media (#AdrisAngels.)
